There is a new show on the Sundance channel called Push Girls. It’s about 4 gorgeous LA women. They are all in wheelchairs.
Just fir the record, I liked the show.
EVERYONE keeps asking me this question!
That being said, i must get this out.
That doesn’t mean I ‘relate’.
Yes, we are all young and beautiful (humor me, I can be conceited if I want!) and we are all chair users with SCI.
That’s about it.
Sure we go through some of the same stuff, like stares and unwanted help but as a person we are all very different.
I was not offended by the question, in fact it brought on this post. Anyways, someone(s) asked me if I relate to any of them.
The answer?
No.
Just because they are women in a chair and I’m a woman in a chair, it makes us no more alike than taking 4 blonde AB (that’s able bodied for all you AB people) women and asking every blonde woman they see if they relate to her.
It’s not likely going to happen. I’m sure some people will relate to them and that’s awesome.
I will say I’m going to keep watching. People in chairs all learn unique tips and tricks we don’t even think about and I’m hoping to pick a few ideas up!!
Oh and I really need to start doing wheelies. 12.5 years of not doing them is long enough….

Haven’t even heard of this show yet, but what you say makes perfect sense. Just because we are both moms doesn’t make us the same.
I want to see a wheelie now!!
(And I LOVE the look of the blog!!!!)

haha, I agree…I’m not even sure April has much of an interest in the show.
and about the wheelie, it is time you started then, hehe…I remember one of the first thing I saw of April was a video she did of her spinning wheelies in her chair
Sam´s last blog post ..sshotick: @kaypoots *ahem* i dont mention that with you, and im a real member of "the opposite sex" so dont banish all…maybe just some 😉

Good post! I did ask you yesterday if you relate. Let me clarify 🙂 I didn’t mean it remotely thinking you are all the same because of one specific defining thing. I’m sorry if that’s how it came off~ Let me explain a bit~ I watch (yes I admit it) Real Housewives and I usually pick someone I relate to slightly. If I can’t relate to someone, I generally don’t watch a series.
I have MS. I have a son with Autism. I don’t lump us in with one group either, nor would I do that with anyone else.
I asked if you watched it and what you thought of it because I was genuinely interested to learn if you felt the show did a good job showing the reality of the lives of the women portrayed. Sometimes I watch programs about Autism and find them to be horribly condesending at times. I found Push Girls to be inspiring, but I wanted to get your take on it. If you (a strong woman who is open about her life) found it wasn’t done tastefully/honestly or you thought it was exploiting the women, I’d probably not continue to watch it.
I was in no way making assumptions that YOU are just like these women. I was just wondering if you found one girl in the group that resonated with you.
If I happen to know someone watching Surivor, I would say ‘Who is most like you’. In fact, I did ask someone a while back who on Celebrity Apprentice appealed to them (see the pattern. I’m a reality TV junkie)
I cannot speak for anyone else who asked, but I felt the need to clarify my intent. That is not always easy on a quick Twitter post. I apologize if you felt I was asking your thoughts on the show because you’re a woman and you use a chair and I think that makes you ‘Just like them’. I chose you to ask because, you’re strong, creative and witty AND you ALSO happen to share about your life with your chair~ Your Twitter name (along with your openess/and other qualities) is why I thought you’d be the idea person to ask. It wasn’t just the one thing 🙂 Lg

Okay so I’ve seen snipits of this show on youtube.. being someone with a SCI I was somewhat interested in watching it but I don’t think we get that chanel in the great South West of Canada.. although I would be polite if someone asked if I related.. inside, it would piss. me. off! Because they are only asking because I’m in a chair.. I’ve never been asked if I related to anyone on Desperate Housewives.. or Charlie’s Angels! And I can be an ass kicking nosey bitch when I want to be!!! LOL
Now, that said.. its a disgrace that you haven’t done any wheelies yet!!! I do them all the time to get over bumps and gravel and stuff.. as a kid I’d do them just to freak people out hehe.. so get on it with it girl!! And report back with pictures! haha

Hey, finally someone sees it like me. I can’t relate much cause I have been in a chair all my life im 27 yrs onld plus I’m a single mom I use a power chair though. Its an okay show, but they were all in some type of business before, so it’s easy for them to do a show they know people.
