We gave him meds every 3 hours, rotating tylenol (or the prescribed tylenol cocktail) and Motrin. He was getting each one every six. There was no window for pain to start and we hoped to keep it that way.
He slowed down just a bit on Friday, which of course is when Grandma went home.
However, there still wasn’t much pain, he wasn’t really limiting his foods (except for SHARP things) and he was pretty much normal. Except for his breath. OH GOODNESS HIS BREATH. IT was awful.
The weekend was uneventful, but giving him meds started to become a big ordeal and would sometimes take 15+ minutes. He was feeling great and angry we weren’t just letting him sleep.
Somehow, we missed the alarm one night and he slept until about the 6-7 hour mark (with no meds) and woke up in excruciating pain. You could hear in in his voice and see it on his face. We felt HORRIBLE.
Monday morning he woke up covered in blood. His sores were bleeding. We knew this was potentially but to be safe I took him in to see his ENT. He said it was just normal sloughing and to come back again if it bleed without stopping.
He bleed again on Tuesday morning and by now he wasn’t eating much and only drinking enough water so I wouldn’t nag him.
HE WAS IN PAIN. SERIOUS PAIN. This started on DAY SEVEN.
The scabs were gone and his throat was raw.
This continued for a couple of days and by Friday he wasn’t complaining anymore and eating normally.
He had his post op follow-up on Tuesday and given the all clear.
WE SURVIVED!!
